You're not watching a knockdown, you're watching a population decline over days and weeks. Seeing roaches feeding at a placement is the programme working, not failing.
Bait works where cockroaches travel and harbour — behind and beneath appliances, in cabinet voids, around plumbing penetrations, inside hinges and kickplates. Bait in the middle of a clean counter does nothing.
The single biggest problem. Cockroaches detect and avoid treated surfaces, so a ring of retail spray around a bait placement is a fence keeping them from the thing that would kill them.

Understandable and destructive.
This is the one people underestimate. Bait has to be more attractive than everything else available. Grease under the stove, crumbs behind the toaster, an open bin, and dishes left overnight all compete directly with the treatment. Sanitation isn't nagging in a cockroach programme — it's part of the treatment, because it removes the competition.
Egg cases are protected, and females of the main indoor species carry them until close to hatching. A treatment that ends when the visible roaches disappear leaves a hatch cycle intact.
The ones that breed indoors year-round and drive most persistent household problems. Small, light brown, with two dark stripes behind the head. They concentrate in kitchens and bathrooms near warmth and moisture, and they reproduce quickly. Females carry the egg case until nearly ready to hatch, which shields the eggs from most treatments — the main reason infestations rebound after incomplete work.
Much larger and reddish-brown, typically found in basements, crawlspaces, drains, sewers, and utility spaces. They generally enter from outside or via plumbing rather than breeding through living areas, so treatment focuses on entry and harborage rather than on an indoor breeding population.
Dark and glossy and strongly associated with damp — drains, basements, and areas with standing water. Their presence usually points at a moisture problem that needs fixing alongside treatment.
Spread more widely through a property than German cockroaches, harbouring in furniture, electronics, and higher areas rather than clustering near water. Placement strategy changes accordingly.
