Modern cockroach control is built on bait, and almost every instinct a homeowner has works against it.
Bait works because cockroaches feed, return to harborage, and share what they've eaten through the population — including nymphs that never leave the wall void and never encounter anything you spray. Done properly, the colony collapses from the inside.
Spraying a repellent product across the same area teaches them to avoid it, including the bait. Fogging pushes them deeper into voids and appliance housings. Wiping down surfaces where placements sit removes the treatment. Leaving food residue available gives them something to eat that isn't the bait.
None of that is obvious, which is why so many cockroach problems get worse under treatment rather than better.
PestGuard Pro runs bait-based cockroach programmes across Calico Rock, and protects them from the things that undo them.

Repellent products create avoidance behaviour, push the population deeper into wall voids and appliance housings, and reduce bait uptake for weeks afterward.
It deposits product on open surfaces where cockroaches don't live, while driving the breeding population into exactly the cavities that most need treating. Fogging before professional treatment routinely makes the job longer.
Cleaning counters and food surfaces continues as normal — but treated cracks, crevices, and bait placements need to stay put to work.
Not a criticism. Prior spraying genuinely changes how the treatment has to be approached, and we'd rather know than work it out.
Worth understanding, because it explains everything else on this page.
A cockroach feeds on the bait, returns to harborage, and the active ingredient moves through the population by secondary transfer — via droppings, secretions, and other roaches feeding on affected individuals. That reaches the ones you never see: nymphs deep in a wall void, individuals sheltering inside a motor housing, the population behind the dishwasher.
A spray reaches what it touches. A bait reaches the population.
You're not watching a knockdown, you're watching a population decline over days and weeks. Seeing roaches feeding at a placement is the programme working, not failing.
Bait works where cockroaches travel and harbour — behind and beneath appliances, in cabinet voids, around plumbing penetrations, inside hinges and kickplates. Bait in the middle of a clean counter does nothing.
The single biggest problem. Cockroaches detect and avoid treated surfaces, so a ring of retail spray around a bait placement is a fence keeping them from the thing that would kill them.
Same effect at scale, plus dispersal into new areas.
Understandable and destructive.
This is the one people underestimate. Bait has to be more attractive than everything else available. Grease under the stove, crumbs behind the toaster, an open bin, and dishes left overnight all compete directly with the treatment. Sanitation isn't nagging in a cockroach programme — it's part of the treatment, because it removes the competition.
Egg cases are protected, and females of the main indoor species carry them until close to hatching. A treatment that ends when the visible roaches disappear leaves a hatch cycle intact.
The ones that breed indoors year-round and drive most persistent household problems. Small, light brown, with two dark stripes behind the head. They concentrate in kitchens and bathrooms near warmth and moisture, and they reproduce quickly. Females carry the egg case until nearly ready to hatch, which shields the eggs from most treatments — the main reason infestations rebound after incomplete work.
Much larger and reddish-brown, typically found in basements, crawlspaces, drains, sewers, and utility spaces. They generally enter from outside or via plumbing rather than breeding through living areas, so treatment focuses on entry and harborage rather than on an indoor breeding population.
Dark and glossy and strongly associated with damp — drains, basements, and areas with standing water. Their presence usually points at a moisture problem that needs fixing alongside treatment.
Spread more widely through a property than German cockroaches, harbouring in furniture, electronics, and higher areas rather than clustering near water. Placement strategy changes accordingly.
We identify which you have and build the approach around it. Treating an occasional large intruder like an indoor breeding population wastes money; treating a German cockroach infestation like an intruder problem fails outright.
This pattern points to entry and harborage outside the living space, and it's a different — usually simpler — job.
Which means telling you plainly what undermines it, and asking what's already been used.
Because an indoor breeder and an occasional intruder are different problems with different solutions.
Behind and beneath appliances, inside cabinet voids, around plumbing, in the warm cavities of equipment — not across the surfaces you can see.
An established German cockroach infestation takes weeks and more than one visit. We say that at the start.
Products applied per label directions and placed into cracks, voids, and harborage rather than food-preparation surfaces. We'll tell you what to clear and cover and when the space can be used normally. Mention children, pets, pregnancy, or anyone with asthma before we treat.
Cockroach proteins in droppings, shed skins, and body fragments are well-documented indoor allergens and a recognised asthma trigger, with the strongest evidence in children. In a household with an asthmatic child, cockroach control is a health intervention rather than a comfort one.
Cockroaches travel through drains, waste, and sewers and then across counters, dishes, and stored food, carrying bacteria mechanically. They don't bite or sting — the risk is what they deposit.
Anything accessed by an established population should be treated as contaminated.
Persistent, and it penetrates cabinetry and stored items.
Harborage: behind and beneath refrigerators, stoves, and dishwashers; inside motor housings and warm compartments; under sinks and around plumbing penetrations; inside cabinet voids, hinges, and corners; behind kickplates; inside microwaves, toasters, and small electronics; cracks in tile and grout; behind wall clocks and switch plates; inside stored cardboard.
It holds warmth, absorbs moisture, and makes ideal harborage. Long-term cardboard storage in kitchens, pantries, and basements is a common contributor.
How they arrive: in grocery packaging and deliveries — among the most common routes; in secondhand appliances and electronics, which can carry an established population inside them; between units in shared buildings via wall voids and plumbing chases; up from drains for the larger species; and through gaps around utility penetrations and poorly fitted doors.
We'll give you instructions specific to your situation. Generally:
If you already have, tell us.
Sealed containers for dry goods and pet food, prompt cleanup of spills, cleaning under and behind appliances, no dishes overnight, bins with tight lids. In a bait programme this is treatment, not housekeeping.
Fix dripping taps and leaking traps, dry sinks at night, ventilate bathrooms, address damp basements. Cockroaches need water more urgently than food.
Clear cardboard storage, reduce clutter under sinks and in pantries, seal cracks in cabinetry and tile.
Gaps around pipes and utility penetrations, door sweeps, vent screens, and maintained floor drains.
Grocery boxes, deliveries, and especially secondhand appliances and electronics.
Cockroaches move freely between units through wall voids, plumbing chases, and shared utility runs. Treating one unit while neighbouring units go untreated commonly produces short-lived results, because the surrounding population simply returns.
Effective control usually means inspecting and treating adjacent units — including above and below — which requires coordination with building management. We work with tenants, landlords, and property managers, and can supply the documentation many buildings and municipalities require.
If you rent, report it in writing early. Early reporting is what stops a unit-level problem becoming a building-wide one.

Food service carries the highest stakes: health inspection standards, documented pest control records, closure risk, and the reputational damage of a single customer sighting. Kitchen populations establish in equipment voids, drains, and warm cavities rather than in the open, which is where treatment concentrates.
Scheduled monitoring is worth considerably more than reactive treatment in food premises — catching activity at the monitoring stage costs a fraction of managing an infestation found during an inspection.
You'll get a clear estimate after the inspection.

Cockroaches nest in hidden harborage and can persist in spotless homes. Cleaning removes food sources, which helps, but it doesn't reach the population living behind and beneath appliances.
Please don't. Repellent sprays create avoidance, push the population deeper into voids, and reduce bait uptake for weeks. Tell us if you already have.
That's expected. Treatment disturbs harborage and bait draws them out to feed. Numbers should drop noticeably over one to two weeks.
Established German cockroach infestations commonly take several weeks and more than one visit. Occasional larger intruders are usually quicker.
No. They arrive in packaging, deliveries, and secondhand appliances, and they move between units in shared buildings. Sanitation affects how well a population thrives, not whether one arrives.
Because in a bait programme, food residue competes directly with the bait. Removing it makes the treatment more attractive than the alternatives.
Products are applied per label directions and placed into cracks, voids, and harborage rather than on food-preparation surfaces. We'll tell you what to clear and when the space can be used normally.
Worth investigating, particularly if it was during the day. They're nocturnal and secretive, so one visible individual usually indicates more.
Yes — warm motor housings in dishwashers, microwaves, and electronics are prime harborage. It's one reason appliance access matters during preparation.
In shared buildings, reintroduction from adjacent units is common. Coordinated treatment across affected units is what produces lasting results.
Discard anything in packaging that's been accessed. Sealed, undamaged containers are generally fine. We'll advise based on what we find.
Their droppings and shed skins are recognised asthma triggers, particularly for children, and they transfer bacteria mechanically onto surfaces and food. They don't bite.
Bait reaches the population you can't see — but only if nothing is teaching them to avoid it, pushing them deeper, wiping it away, or offering something better to eat.
